1916 families demand more to save Rising sites

Relatives of the leaders of the 1916 Rising are backing calls to give special planning status to the Moore Street area.

The relatives are supporting plans from Fianna Fáil to give the area special legal protection and turn it into a Historical Quarter.

They say the Government's plans to buy the units from 14-17 Moore Street, including number 16 which formed the last headquarters of the Rising leaders, do not go far enough.

Fianna Fáil's bill would replicate the Temple Bar model of legal regulation, setting up a new state company to take ownership of the area, giving it greater control over the usage of the properties and nearby lanes.
