Thousands of customers in Limerick city and county have had their power restored overnight following a major outage.

The power went out just after 7 o'clock yesterday evening following a fault in the Southill substation.

Locals said they heard a loud bang and saw a bright light before the electricity went out.

ESB Networks apologised to customers for the outage.
