More than a thousand families are now in emergency accommodation, with children even being put up on the floor of some adult hostels.

2 thousand 121 children were homeless in April - a 90 per cent rise compared April last year.

New figures show the number of homeless families has passed one thousand for the first time, with more than 2 thousand children being put up in emergency accommodation.

The Irish Times reports that in the past week alone, four families had to be placed in adult hostels late at night, with children on blow up beds on the floor.

The housing charity, Treshold will appear before the Dáil Housing and Homelessness committee this morning, which aims to find solutions to the current crisis.

The Housing Finance Agency estimates that 1.3 billion euro is needed over the next four years to fund a social housing programme, with 13 thousand five hundred new homes.

The Agency is holding a conference in Dublin this morning, that will hear calls for the EU to extend government borrowing to fund more social housing.
