A man who stabbed and killed a 64-year-old Irishman in Australia has been handed a 27 year jail sentence.

27 year old Gavin Perry had been on parole at the time and had a long criminal history.

Dermot O'Toole - who is originally from Galway - was murdered in his jewellery shop in Victoria, in July last year, while trying to protect his wife Bridget.

Mrs O'Toole was also stabbed a number of times in the botched robbery attempt.

Gavin Perry had pleaded guilty to murder, armed robbery and intentionally causing injury - he said he was high on the drug 'ice' when he carried out the attack.

Mrs O’Toole said she was tormented by the fact that if Perry had not been released on parole, her husband would still be alive.
