Today marks thirty years since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The accident in 1986 released radiation 200 times greater than both atomic bombs during World War two.
Thousands of people have died as a result of the radiation - while many more have suffered severe disability in the intervening years.
Efforts are continuing to contain the site permanently - with the construction of a concrete dome now underway.
To mark the anniversary Chernobyl Children International founder Adi Roche will become the first representative of an NGO to address the UN General Assembly today.
