A four year old boy has died, after a road crash in Co Laois.

He was seriously injured in a two car collision on the Portlaoise Road outside Portarlington at about 8.30 last night, but he later died in hospital.

His mother - in her 30s - and 7 year old brother are still being treated in hospital.

The driver of the second car was arrested at the scene and has since been released without charge.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
