A 48 hour work stoppage by SPITU and the NBRU at Irish Rail is underway this morning.

Services across the Intercity, DART and Commuter routes have ground to a halt

The all-out strike will affect over 160-thousand commuters and those attending the All Ireland Football semi final between Kerry and Mayo in Croke Park later today.

The Labour Court found that payroll savings are "Unavoidable" if the future of the company and it's staff was to be secured.

However SIPTU says the company has reneged on a deal it made with workers in 2012, and now its members do not believe guarantees from management that cuts to their pay will be temporary.

Paul Cullen Assistant Organiser for SIPTU at Irish Rail, says workers have been left with no other option but to strike.

Iarnrod Eireann has apologised to passengers for this disruption to services.

Spokesperson Barry Kenny, says the company needs to make urgent savings in order to survive.
