Support for the government parties has fallen in the latest political opinion poll.

The Red C poll for tomorrow’s Sunday Business Post also shows strong support for the same-sex marriage referendum - but an increasing number of undecided voters.

Sinn Féín’s support rises by 5 points to 22pc - four weeks after the last poll showed it had fallen by 4 points in a fortnight, amid allegations of an IRA cover-up of the abuse of Paudie McGahon.

It’s still behind Fine Gael, but the gap has narrowed - the leading government party are down two points to 25.

Likewise Labour also take a hit - down two points to 8, while Fianna Fáil gain one point and stand at 19.

Independent candidates still retain 24 per cent of the vote, unchanged, while the Greens and Renua are each down 1 point to 1pc.

In the same-sex marriage referendum 72pc are still in favour - with 20pc opposed and 8pc undecided.

When undecideds are removed, the margin is 78 to 22 - unchanged since six weeks ago - but the proportion of undecided voters has risen, with both the Yes and No camps losing some firm votes.

The new poll shows a third of Yes voters still have some reservations about their vote - believing that marriage need not be redefined when civil partnerships are already provided for, or having concerns about children being raised by gay couples.

1,006 voters were polled for the Red C between between Monday and Wednesday of this week. The poll has a margin of error of 3 per cent.
