The HSE says it expects to cut around 75,000 medical cards next year, as part of plans to slash spending by nearly 1 billion euro.
However the agency's service plan for next year has slashed the amount it expects to save in medical card cutbacks next year.
Meanwhile the HSE's already warning that some of the savings being demanded by government may be impossible to deliver.
