Gardai in Cork are appealing for witnesses to a two vehicle collision that has claimed the life of a 78 year old woman.

The woman's 75 year old sister was also injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a truck at half past eleven this morning on the main Cork-Kanturk Road, at Glen South near Banteer.

The emergency services were called and the 78 year old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out later.

The woman's sister, a front seat passenger, was also injured while the driver of the truck was treated for shock.

Gardai closed off the road and diversions are in place to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene.

Elsewhere - a 66 year-old woman - a pedestrian - has died in hospital following a collision in Co Fermanagh earlier this week.

It happened at Lisnaskea on Monday the 14th of December.

A man was arrested and released on bail pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
