An investigation has been launched into the death of an 8 year old Irish boy in the US.

The child became trapped under a boat after it capsized near Boston last Wednesday, he was taken to hospital but died on Saturday.

It's understood the family are originally from Clonmel in Tipperary but have been living in Massachusetts.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says its aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
