An eight year old girl is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Co Monaghan last night.

It happened at Cortober, Ballybay, shortly before 8pm.

The girl was airlifted to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.

A section of the Ballybay to Clones Road is closed for a forensic examination and local diversions are in place.
