80 blue flag awards have been given to beaches right around the country.

The prize is given to beaches or marinas that meet top international standards on water quality.

However, 5 beaches were passed over because of ongoing storm repair works.

To be given a blue flag by An Taisce, a beach has to meet strict criteria on water quality, safety, and litter, and visitor facilities must be top class.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan this morning said he was pleased that 6 more blue awards were given out this year than last.

And he paid particular tribute to community groups who helped clean up their areas.

Five beaches at Bertra and Mulranny in Mayo, Rossbeigh in Kerry and Miltown Malbay and Spanish Point in Clare all lost out, because they were damaged during Spring storms.

Meanwhile, 4 beaches in north Co. Dublin regained their Blue Flags - Portmarnock, Portrane, Donabate and Skerries South Beach.

Similarly, Morriscastle in Wexford and North Ballybunion in Kerry regained their flags, while in Waterford, 2 blue flags were regained for Councellors Strand and Dunmore Strand.
