9,000 People Die From Cancer Every Year

40,000 people are being diagnosed with cancer every year, according to the Irish Cancer Society.

9,000 people die from the disease in Ireland annually - with lung cancer being the biggest killer.

But the 5-year cancer survival rate has increased to 61 per cent. Non Melanoma Skin Cancer is the most commonly treated form.

Cancer rates are set to double in the next twenty years as our population ages and Donal Buggy from the Irish Cancer Society says we need huge investment in services if we're to cope with that challenge.

'We really have to figure out and invest now in new doctors, new nurses and new treatment pathways to ensure that cancer patients of the future will get as good if not better treatment in ten or twenty years time than they're getting today'.
