Since the start of the year nearly 300 people have contacted Dogs Trust Ireland looking for advice about how to give up a a dog.
The charity says 1 in 3 calls being received are about surrendering a dog bought as a Christmas present which is now no longer wanted.

In one case, a heavily pregnant Shih Tzu was abandoned during the second week in January because her puppies hadn't been born in time for the Christmas market.
