Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a woman in her early 60's was killed in a collision in Birr in Co. Offaly this morning.

A car collided with a transport lorry at 11:20am on the N52 Kilcormac to Tullamore road just outside Kilcormac.

The driver and passenger of the car, both women in their 60's, were transferred to Midlands Regional Hospital for treatment.

The passengers injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at Midlands Regional Hospital.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured.

The road was closed for a time to facilitate a forensic collision investigation but has since reopened.
