Adam Clayton's former personal assistant has lost an appeal against her conviction for stealing nearly €3 million from the U2 bassist.

Carol Hawkins, originally from North London but with a last address at Lower Rathmines Road, Dublin was jailed in 2012 on 181 counts of theft from two of the musician's Bank of Ireland accounts between 2004 to 2008.

Carol Hawkins wasn't in court for today's ruling which has upheld her conviction for stealing cheques that allowed her draw down nearly 3 million euro from Adam Clayton's bank accounts.

The U2 bassist's former PA spent the money on 22 thoroughbred horses, shopping sprees, a New York apartment and she also funded her children's education.

One of the arguments put forward by her lawyers on appeal was that the trial judge was wrong to allow Adam Clayton listen to the evidence of expert witnesses before he took to the stand himself

However the court has found there was no reason to exclude the musician from court prior as the evidence he heard about the forensic analysis of the movement of money had nothing to do with his own testimony.

The court has yet to decide whether to reduce Carol Hawkins's 7 year jail sentence.

Her lawyers say she's a model prisoner making amends whose suffered public notoriety for offences that will follow her to the grave.

The prosecution says 7 years is appropriate as the 51 year old has shown a lack of insight and remorse in relation to her offending behaviour.
