Aer Lingus and Ryanair avoid huge fines

The EU's highest court has ruled that Aer Lingus and Ryanair will NOT have to pay tens of millions of euro in fines - in a row over the travel tax.

Ryanair had complained that the original travel tax discriminated against some passengers, who had to pay a higher fare if they were travelling abroad.

The European Commission agreed - but said Aer Lingus and Ryanair had to repay millions in revenue because the tax was an example of illegal state aid.

They appealed the decision to the European Court of Justice, which has today set aside those fines.
