The former justice minister says he'll donate his ministerial severance pay to charity.

Alan Shatter is to donate the payments - worth €70,252 - to the Jack & Jill Foundation.

The announcement comes after the Taoiseach called on his former minister to "do the right thing" and return the payments.

The former minister says he has no plans to resign from the Dáil:

The CEO of the Jack & Jill Foundation, Jonathan Irwin, said the money would be put to good use:

Deputy Shatter said he had only become aware of his entitlement to severance pay a few days ago - and that he was not in a position to determine his response until now.

He said the treatment of the money under Irish tax law would mean Jack & Jill benefit to the tune of over €50,000 - while, if he were to keep the money himself, he would gain around €34,000.
