Almost half of speeding cases before the courts are struck out.

Over 60,000 speeding offences have been listed in the courts over the last two and a half years.

45 per cent of the 61,000 speeding offences listed in the courts between 2017 and the end of May of this year were struck out - because summonses had not been served.

The summonses were meant to be served on drivers who failed to pay fixed-charge penalty notices.

The Irish Independent reports that Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says a variety of issues are causing the problem, including offenders evading being served the notice by Gardaí.

Drivers in counties Wexford, Westmeath and Limerick were much more likely to be served summons than those in Monaghan, Sligo, Mayo and Kerry.

Monaghan was the county with the highest rate of summons' not being served, with just over 60 per cent of speeding offences struck out.
