Man Appears In Court On Historic Child Abuse Charges

A man in his 70s has appeared in court on charges of historic child abuse, going back to the 1970s and '80s.

The man, who can't be identified due to the nature of the charges, was arrested at Dublin Airport this morning.

The man was arrested just before 6 o’clock this morning at Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport.

From there, he was taken to Ballymun Garda Station, where he was charged at 7.40am.

He’s facing 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape against four women, who were children at the time of the alleged offending in the 1970s and 1980s.

The man was brought into court this morning in a wheelchair, wearing shorts, a green top, and brown slip-on shoes with white socks.

He didn’t apply for bail today.

During the brief hearing, his solicitor, Tracy Horan, told Judge Michele Finan that her client requires medical assistance while in custody.

She said he urgently needs dentures and a hearing aid.

She pointed out that he isn’t working and has no assets, so there was no objection to his application for legal aid.

Judge Finan then remanded the man in custody to appear in court again this day next week, when the book of evidence may be ready to be served on him.
