The National Ambulance Service has launched an investigation after an ambulance carrying a patient from Cork to Dublin for a lung transplant, ground to a halt at Newlands Cross on the outskirts of Dublin.

The incident happened on Thursday, when the ambulance was being given a Garda escort from Cork to a Dublin hospital.

It's not clear whether the ambulance ran out of diesel or had a mechanical problem.

The patient walked from the ambulance to the Garda car and was taken to hospital.

Sinn Fein's health spokesperson Caoimhghin O'Caolain said its unacceptable, and he will be raising the issue with the Minister for Health James Reilly and the HSE at the first opportunity.
