Animals including lions, tigers and a hippo have been left to roam the streets after severe flooding in the Georgian capital Tblisi.

Flooding destroyed their enclosures at the city's zoo overnight.

Some animals have been killed or recaptured, while residents are being urged to stay home.

The AP news agency reports that an escaped hippo was cornered in one of the city's main squares and subdued with a tranquilizer gun. Some other animals have been seized, but it remained unclear how many are on the loose.

Bears and wolves are also among the animals who fled from their enclosures amid the flooding from heavy rains and high winds.

At least 8 people have died in the floods - including 3 zookeepers.
