The Health Minister says the current restrictions on travel, work and movement will remain in place for the next few weeks.

The National Public Health Emergency Team is likely to formally recommend an extension of the measures, due to end on Sunday, for several more weeks.

Simon Harris says the rate of growth of the virus has slowed significantly in Ireland recently.

He says the number of cases has grown by an average of 9% this week - compared to 33% a month ago.

263 people in the Republic have now died after contracting Covid-19, with a further 26 patients confirmed to have lost their lives yesterday.

The total number of diagnosed cases has risen to 6,574.

The world's death toll from coronavirus is now approaching 100,000.

96,000 people have now lost their lives, and more than 1.6 million people have been got Covid-19.

The virus continues to grow sharply in the US, where there are now nearly half a million cases and 17,000 deaths.
