It's to become a legal requirement for anyone arriving into the country from overseas to fill out a Covid-19 Public Health Passenger Locator Form.

Spot checks will also be carried out to make sure these people are staying where they said that they would.

The measure will come into effect from Thursday and remain in place until June 18th when it will then be reviewed.

The penalties for non-compliance will be a maximum 6-month jail term or a fine of €2,500.

However, it won't apply to people coming into the country from Northern Ireland.

There are also exemptions for the following people:

o        Aircraft crew, including the pilot, who are in Ireland in the course of performing their duties
o        Diplomats
o        International transport workers who:
§        Have a Green Lane Annex 3 Certificate
§        Are driving a Heavy Goods Vehicle
§        Have a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence card, or
§        Whose driving licence displays code 95.
o        Ship crew, including the master, who are in Ireland in the course of performing their duties.
