The Apple iPhone may be using the same chargers as its Android competitors by next year.

Tech expert Jess Kelly says the tech giant could complete the move to standard USB-C chargers by the middle of 2023.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is already testing the change, although it is unlikely to be introduced in time for the iPhone 14 which is due for release later this year.

Instead, USB-C looks likely to become standard with the iPhone 15 in September 2023.

The move is in response to looming EU legislation that aims to introduce a single charger for all phones and tablets sold in the bloc.

Jess says the iPhone is the last Apple device that is not compatible with USB-C.

“If you have a new iPad, they already charge with USB-C – because it makes sense,” she said.

“The only awkward child left at the moment is the iPhone, but fingers crossed that will change from next year.”

She said the change will make things a bit more universal – so people can share chargers at home and in work.

The only issue now is what happens if you buy the iPhone 14 only to find that your charger is obsolete within a year.

“Say you’ve bought a relatively new iPhone, if you buy a charger or any accessories, come 2023, potentially those accessories won’t work with new iPhones because they will have changed yet again,” she said.

The tech giant is reportedly working on a Lightning to USB-C adapter to allow compatibility between the two connection types and phone models.
