New crime statistics show an increase in burglaries and theft.

The Central Statistics Office is currently reviewing crime figures and the Justice Minister is to examine them before the figures are published this month.

The review was prompted by the findings of a critical report by the Garda Inspectorate which found many crimes going unreported.

Other types of crime including assault have also increased.
