A man has been critically injured after a serious assault in Derry.

The victim, who's in his twenties, was attacked shortly before 1 am on Waterloo Street.

He was rushed to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

A 22 year old man was arrested a short time later and is helping police with their enquiries.

In a separate investigation, a man is in a serious condition following a hit and run in Belfast.

The male pedestrian - in his 40's - was struck by a car on the Lisburn Road shortly before 10 pm last night.

Police are looking for a silver coloured car, which may have significant damage to the front.
