AUDIO: Met Eireann issues orange alert

Severe weather conditions are expected to cause travel disruption over the next 24 hours.

Met Eireann has issued a nationwide status orange alert, with gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour forecast.

Road users in particular are being urged to be extremely careful when travelling around the country.

Brian Farrell, from the Road Safety Authority, says drivers must be extra vigilant given the conditions:The stormy conditions will be worst in coastal counties.

Very strong winds are set to reach speeds up to 80 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 130 kilometres per hour.

There will also be showers of hail, sleet and snow, with icy conditions on some roads.

Gerry Murphy, a meterologist with Met Eireann, says the weather will make driving conditions difficult:The adverse weather conditions are expected to cause some travel disruption, over the coming days.

Road users in particular are being urged to be extremely careful when travelling around the country

The Road Safety Authority is appealing to pedestrians and cyclists to wear bright and reflective clothing.

Assistant Garda Commissioner John Twomey is also warning motorists against taking any risks:
