The number of babies being born here has jumped by 28 percent since 2001.

Seventy four thousand and thirty three babies (74,033) were born in Ireland in 2011 - according to the Central Statistics Office.

The rate of twins has also rocketed in the 20 years to 2011 from 11.7 sets of twins per 1000 live births in 1991 to 18 in 2011.

The average age of mothers in 2011 was almost 32 - and 33 percent of births occur ouside marriage.

The highest percentage of births outside marriage is Limerick City at almost 49 percent - and the lowest is Galway county at 25 percent.
