Bank of Ireland criticised for new cash rules

Bank of Ireland says it will make sure that vulnerable customers are helped to use services available in its branches.

It comes after the Finance Minister criticised its decisions to impose new minimum amounts for withdrawals in its branches.

From next week customers will have to use ATMs for any withdrawal under €700 - while lodgements can only be made at the counter if they're over €3,000.

The moves are aimed at encouraging customers to use electronic banking options, and the banks says it maintains the most extensive network of branches in Ireland while other banks had cut back.

Michael Noonan described the moves as "surprising and unnecessary" - but this evening the bank has defended the move and says it will continue to support more vulnerable customers who aren't comfortable with self-service or electronic options.

However groups representing older people have spoken out with concern about the plans, as they feel a reduction in person-to-person service is more likely to impact on elderly customers.
