There are fresh concerns about Beaumont Hospital this morning after its Chief Executive told staff it was at an "unsafe" capacity.

According to The Sunday Business Post, Liam Duffy told staff last month that the hospital needs to "regain stability as a matter of urgency".

He wrote to staff to say that 58 patients were in the hospital's emergency department on a particular day in August - and one had to wait 44 hours to be discharged.

In a statement, the hospital says the matter was elevated to consultants to speed up the discharge of any suitable patients.

The Sunday Business Post's Health Correspondent Susan Mitchell says the issue will become a major concern for the Health Minister in the coming months.
