Being overprotective could increase your child's suicide risk

Overprotecting your children and problem solving for them could contribute to higher suicide risks in later life.

That's the message from mental health practitioner and author Dr Harry Barry who has been speaking at a Console Suicide conference in Dublin today.

Iconic landmarks around Ireland will light up orange tonight to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

Thousands of homes and communities will also take part in the light up event at 9 o'clock.

Dr Harry Barry is warning parents that they have a massive role to play in educating their children to expect some disappointment in life.

Children who haven't been taught this lack the resilience to be able to find solutions when they face a crisis.
