The board of the Beit Foundation has agreed to postpone the controversial sale of a number of its paintings at Christie's in London, after private donors offered to buy the works.
The priceless collection at Russborough House in Co Wicklow was gifted to the Irish people - but the trustees say they were forced to sell some paintings to pay for the upkeep of the historic home.
The Beit Foundation says it needs €15 million to maintain the house and is seeking a meeting with the government to see what support the state can offer.
