The PSNI says a bomb found in Belfast last night was designed to kill or maim police officers and showed callous disregard for public safety.

Dozens of families were evacuated from their homes near Alliance Avenue in the north of the city, after police visiting the area to investigate reports that shots had been fired found a device at a home.

North belfast area commander Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn said it was a heinous act, and the community was very fortunate that no-one was killed or seriously injured.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes at about 9 O'clock last night.

The PSNI are extremely keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious vehicles or activity in the area.
