An armed man has been shot several times by police in the Belgian city of Ghent.

Police were called in following reports that a man was wandering the streets armed with a handgun.

They opened fire after the man refused to lay down the weapon.

It is unclear at this point if the incident was terrorism-related.

Belgium is on high alert since the Brussels airport attack in March.
