Families who have lost a child have been remembering them today.
The charity First Light - which helps bereaved parents - says the shortest day of the year can be welcome, as the days begin to get brighter again.
They're also making people aware of strategies to help them cope over the Christmas period.
Nicole Gernon reports:
The charity provides counselling, workshops and befriending services.
It's also selling candles in St Stephen's Green shopping centre in Dublin to help raise money and awareness
It says Christmas can be a very difficult time for bereaved parents but family and friends can help by bringing the child's name up and sharing memories.
It's also advising parents to remember to suit themselves this time of year but it says there are some things they can do which might make the day a little easier.
These include lighting a candle, hanging a special decoration, buying a present in their child's name and donating it to a boy or girl in need and leaving a place setting for them.
