Bertie Ahern says he still "has a contribution to make" to Fianna Fáil.

The former Taoiseach says he'd like to play "a small role" at local level, to help the party win back seats in Dublin Central.

A cumann in the constituency has sparked controversy, by inviting him to rejoin.

In an interview with the Sunday Independent, Mr Ahern said he hasn't yet received an invitation.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said he doesn't anticipate Mr Ahern returning.
