Tomorrow's bus strike will go ahead after talks aimed at resolving the dispute broke down.

More than 1 million passengers will be left stranded when Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann services grind to a halt at midnight tonight for 48 hours.

Unions and management from both companies held exploratory talks at the Labour Relations Commission this afternoon but those talks have ended unsuccessfully.

The row centers on plans to sell off one in ten routes to private operators.

Speaking on the way out of the LRC, SIPTU's Owen Reidy says they weren't happy with what they heard at today's discussions:

The Minister for Transport says he's disappointed the talks have broken down.

He has reiterated that he feels the action is unjustified - and will cause considerable damage to an economy that is in recovery.

Paschal Donohoe also says it will have financial implications for the bus companies who are just getting back on their feet, and discommode the travelling public.
