The Abortion Rights Campaign is calling for immediate reform of abortion laws in Ireland, after a young Belfast woman who bought drugs online to miscarry was given a suspended prison sentence.

The group says if the 19 year old lived in any other jurisdiction in the UK, she could have legally accessed abortion services through the NHS.

The woman couldn't afford to travel from Belfast to England for a termination, and took drugs bought online to miscarry in July 2014.

ARC spokesperson Linda Kavanagh says the woman was essentially convicted for being too poor to travel.
