Call for independent commission on Tuam babies

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin says he wants to see all mother and baby homes investigated by an independent commission of inquiry with full judicial powers.

Diarmuid Martin's comments come after reports that up to 800 infants and children are buried in a mass grave in the grounds of a convent run by the Bon Secours order of nuns in Tuam, Co Galway.

Dr Martin also wants the adoption issue to be looked at.

A number of vigils will take place this week as a mark of respect for the women and children who died at the Tuam home.
