An Independent TD has called for a Revenue crackdown to tackle "petrol stretching".
The practice - which sees up to 10 per cent heating oil added to bulk-up fuel - can destroy car engines.
The scam has caused thousands of euro in damage in the border and midland regions in recent months - and motorists are being asked to notify Gardaí.
Independent TD Denis Naughten says the Finance Bill should be changed to help Revenue tackle stretching head-on.
