The charity Women's Aid has been calling for greater sanctioning of abuse against women both by the courts and the community at large.
It comes after Celebrity Big Brother star Jeremy McConnell was found guilty earlier this month of assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend Stephanie Davis.
McConnell has since been publicy praised by his friends on social media and has posted Instagram pictures endorsing a tooth whitening product.
