The new watchdog set up to regulate the charity sector says it needs to triple its current staffing levels in order to do its job fully.

The Charities Regulatory Authority says it needs 36 staff to perform all the roles it's being given under law - but only currently has 12 workers.

The agency is to get more staff by September, to bring its total compliment up to 20 - but it says that in order to fulfill all of the functions it will be given under law, 36 will be needed.

The regulator was set up last October in the wake of public disquiet about the management of the likes of the Rehab Group and the Central Remedial Clinic - although the laws allowing for it were passed as long ago as 2009.

There are calls this lunchtime for immediate action to give the agency more staff.
