Cameron presides over final PMQs

David Cameron will step down as British Prime Minister this afternoon, paving the way for the appointment of Theresa May.

Cameron's departure will come at around 5pm this evening.

This lunchtime he has presided over his final session of Prime Ministers' Questions in the House of Commons.

He received a standing ovation as he left, after encouraging his successor Theresa May to maintain a close relationship with the European Union.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn temporarily dispensed with the usual partisan comments, wishing the outgoing prime minister well and thanking him for his six years of service.

In particular Corbyn thanked him for his work in ensuring the release of a British citizen from the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay, and for enacting legislation to provide for same-sex marriage in Britain.
