Canadian police believe they have found the bodies of two teenage boys who were suspects in three murders.

A manhunt has been underway in recent weeks after two people - Lucas Fowler, from Australia, and his US girlfriend Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina - were found shot dead on a highway in British Columbia.

They were discovered days before the body of 64-year-old lecturer Leonard Dyck was found in the same province.

Officers have spent weeks covering thousands of kilometres in their search for two suspects - 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky.

A missing persons investigation was initially launched following the discovery of the boys' burning truck - but the operation later became a manhunt after the teenagers became suspects in the three murder cases.

A vehicle used by the two boys was found burnt-out near Gillam, Manitoba - more than 3,000km away from British Columbia.

Today, officers in the province of Manitoba confirmed they had found bodies of two males close to where some of the teenagers' belongings were discovered on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said police were confident the bodies were those of the suspects, and an autopsy is being organised to confirm their identities.

She added: "To the families of everyone affected by the series of events over the last few weeks... I know it has been so very difficult.

"I hope today's announcement can begin to bring some closure."
