There was a 35% increase in car sales in September when compared to the same time last year.

That's according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office which also show that Volkswagen is Ireland's most popular car brand.

Sales remained strong for the German manufacturer despite the recent emissions scandal.

Conor Faughnan from the AA says that despite the increase in overall sales, they're only now returning to boom levels.
