The President has laid a wreath in Dublin in memory of those who died at war or while on duty with the United Nations.
Michael D. Higgins is joined by Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tanaiste Joan Burton for the commemoration day ceremony at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, Dublin.
Some members of the new cabinet including Ministers Alex White, Frances Fitzgerald, and Heather Humphries are also in attendance- making it their first official engagement in office.
Events are being held in Cork, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Mayo, Sligo, Waterford to remember the 86 soldiers who died in service of the United Nations since 1960.
