From today, children aged 6 and 7 can visit their GP for free.

Under 6s have been able to avail of free visits since 2015.

While doctor visits will be completely free of charge, medicines will still have to be paid for.

Parents can register their kids for the visit cards on the HSE's website.

Shaun Flanagan, from the HSE (Health Service Executive), encourages parents and guardians to apply online.

Our expectation is that about 78,000 children will get access to GP visit cards under this measure.

Over the last few months, our staff have worked very hard to ensure people can register as simply as possible.

So, we would be asking and encouraging individuals who want to apply to use our online application system.

Families and guardians can apply online from today via the HSE website - hse.ie/gpvisitcards
