President Xi Jinping has approved plans to allow couples to have two children.

It will end more than three decades of the controversial law which was introduced in 1979.

The regulation resulted in widespread use of forced abortions in cases where mothers became pregnant again.

The abolition of the rule is designed to manage China's move to 'more balanced' economic growth.
